I am 37 yrs old, currently onboard CB Networker as 2/E / Safety officer, in one of Global Marine System Ltd. vessel. Our principal is based in the U.K.
I will be home on August 2010 and compleated my time here onboard.

thats the sad part of being seafarers nowadays..you need a backer for you to be accepted as deck cadet. speaking from someones experience...looking back he was like you few years ago. he applied for apprenticeship on interisland bec he doesnt have anyone to back him up in some manning agencies. still it took him a year to be accepted. after that he took the exam for 3/m, 2/m, c/m and master at the age of 27 w/ experience on interisland. thats why when he applied for abroad no one can refuse him. im sharing this story so you will be inspired. if you;ve been waiting for so long to materialize your dreams on international waters,why not try inter-island and then take the exams. focus to your goal...besides, the same exams are given to seafarers whether you have local or international experience. looking back, he made the right choice..hes way ahead of them. but, whats important is he has a good heart and wants to help others. right now, he is in a company that pays lower compared to others but he is happy coz he is helping someone.to seamen, improve yourself, take the exams and trainings. its a big world out there and the competition is tough. have a long term plan. but remember to be humble and to be thankful everyday. I am not a seaman, but a wife of one. I was able to read one of the posts here regarding the difficulty to apply or to be hired for that matter in shipping companies if you dont have a backer. It pains me to know that, that kind of system strongly exists in the shipping industry.
My husband used to be in that shoes. Finding it very hard to be accepted in any companies because he doesnt know anyone that could help him. My husband was very intelligent when he was in college and graduated with the highest honors, but he soon found out that the medals are not sufficient enough to land him a job in any companies, the need to have a backer is the most important factor.
After long years of waiting, his perseverence paid off. He is now hired in one of the best shipping companies that this country have. And is able to provide well for his family.
The bottom line is this: everybody must be given their fair share in the shipping industry. Every seaman who wants to be hired in any shipping company must be given the opportunity as long as he is competent enough..backer or WITHOUT BACKER. Lets remember that these people went to school with a dream, lets us not deprive them of the materialization of that dream just because they dont know someone to usher them in the company. Let us be the vehicle that will transport them to their destiny. |
